About Engage

Engage Oxford are a group formed by the people of Wolvercote and North Oxford opposed to the plans to build a one hundred acre office and retail park: the Northern Gateway next to Wolvercote. We believe the traffic congestion caused by a further 10,000 cars per day would be catastrophic for road safety, travel time and air quality. These are already severe problems; we want to see improvements not further degeneration!

Thank you for the overwhelming support we have already received and for offers of assistance and attendance at our meetings. We have given evidence to the Planning Inspector, influenced local politicians and made them aware of the depth of feeling in our community. We would like to see Planning decisions which consider beauty, conservation and the needs of local people, not just the whims of big business, greedy landowners and council bureaucracy.

We want the Planners to consider the need for clean air and places to work and play. In opposing the Northern Gateway, we have made friends, had fun and found common ground with our neighbours. As ordinary people, we can be extraordinarily powerful if we communicate and share in a common campaign.

Our Structure & Aims

In order to campaign against the Northern Gateway we must raise money to support our activities and to pay for legal advice as well as all the daily costs of postage, printing and web hosting.

To allow us to do so, we have elected a Steering Group, adopted a constitution and opened bank accounts. Our formal aims are:

'The Aim of ENGAGE Oxford is to work to improve the local environment for people living in or using the northern edge of Oxford City.

We will work with other local organizations to fight any damaging development of the land between and around Pear Tree and Wolvercote'
